(98) When Galaxies Collide

The Andromeda Galaxy is 2.5 million light-years away. But every second it gets about 68 miles closer. This means in about 4 billion years there will be a collision between it and the Milky Way. Now since galaxies are still mostly empty space, very few if any actual collisions will take place. But massive disruptions will occur in the galactic orbits of most every star. And this is a disaster that no conceivable level of technology can avoid; the momentum of a galaxy is simply too great to change.

(99) All Alone

Cosmology is not a field full of certainties, but as best we can tell right now, we are in a universe that is not just expanding, but is expanding at an ever faster rate. At some point in the distant future, galaxies will be moving apart so fast the light from one will never reach another. Then instead of the vast universe we see now, they will only see a single galaxy. Even further in the future, even the distance between the stars will become unbridgeable even at the speed of light, and the night sky will be truly black.

Rotten Wood

TYPE: Materials
SUBTYPE: Wood
CATEGORY: Rotten

DEGRADES: 2 years
DECAYS TO: Organic Soil

DESCRIPTION:
The product of decay, almost never made intentionally. It is very hard to set on fire and produces lots of smoke when it eventually does burn (which can be useful for some situations). It will break down into soil that is rich in organic matter that is very good for growing things, but it takes a long time.

Out Of The Clear Blue (50?)

While many threats have arisen in the modern era, one has been occurring since the beginning of the world but has only been a threat for the past 150 years: solar flares.

(02) In A Flash

The most common way to die in seconds is to be struck by lightning. It is said lightning never strikes twice in the same place, but that is patently not true; electricity travels through the path of least resistance.

(100) The End of the Universe

As best we can tell, someday, the Universe will come to an end. Whether it all falls back in on itself in a Big Crunch, expands ever faster until even atoms themselves are ripped apart, or quietly settles down to a uniform temperature everywhere, scientists can only guess at this point. Perhaps something even more bizarre will occur. The ultimate survival question, then, at least from our perspective, is whether there is a way for consciousness to continue past that point: in another Universe, in another dimension, in another form, we can hardly speculate.
