Percentile Deck

When random numbers need to be generated, cards are pulled from a deck numbered 1 to 100. Each card describes a different stage on the Survival Spiral.

(05) Slow Down, You Move Too Fast

DESCRIPTION:

86? Deeper Than A Knife

Torches and Pitchforks

(06) Band Aid Solution

Besides a massive input of energy, thermal or electrical, cutting a major artery and bleeding out is one of the fastest ways to die. If that happens, there is not much you can do about it. Lesser injuries, however, frequently accompany being put into an acute survival situation, and they can kill quite quickly if they are not taken care of right away.

(03) Knife To A Gun Fight

DESCRIPTION:

(80?) Incurable

It is always hard when you are told you have a disease for which there is no cure, no matter how mild or severe your symptoms are. The easy thing to do is give up. But the Survival Spiral is ultimately not about your own life, because you were always destined to lose it from the moment you were born. Of course you should treat your disease as best you can and prolong your life as long as practical, but this is as good a time as any to seriously think about the ones you will be leaving behind. It is by moving each other ahead that we collectively make progress on the Survival Spiral.

(09) Help Me If You Can

When you're in an acute survival situation, what is best is if you can get outside help. This starts before you even get in to it by always letting someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back, so they know when to start looking for you and where. Second, you should think about what you can carry to signal for help: whistles, signal mirrors, material to make signal fires, brightly colored objects, even flare guns.

Nor Any A Drop To Drink

In The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the poet complains "Water, water everywhere, Nor any a drop to drink". It is fairly common knowledge among seafaring folk not to drink seawater, yet, people consume sea salt all the time, so it's not that it is poisonous in itself. Rather, the danger is in the balance between the salts and minerals and water in your body getting to far out of whack. This isn't just an issue on the open ocean, you can be sweating in the desert, eating snow, drinking gallons of distilled water, or just not eating and this can be a problem.
